So I've watched the trailer, and I feel like it's going to have the exact same problem the musical had.

The musical didn't do a very good job of portraying the fact that evan and connor didn't actually know each other.

So, I implore you, if you watch the movie in September, please keep in mind that connor and evan are not actually friends. They did not know each other. They barely knew each other's names.

It's been a bit since I read the book, so i can't speak on much since I don't most of it. However, I did find Connor's povs enjoyable after a while. At first, yeah, there is a weird implication that we're seeing him as a ghost, though to my recollection that goes away and his povs towards the end of the book are more leaned towards his relationship with miguel, showing a side of him the musical didn't (or wasn't able to) explore. Yes, the writing could've been done better, but being honest, the character development wasn't that contrasting to the actual musical (little or none at all among anyone). And I also don't think stories need to have this amazing/chaotic moment to be good. I found myself truly engaged in the book, unlike the musical (which I watched a bootleg of). After a while with the musical, I got bored. I blew through the book in a little under 2 days, which is insane considering I hadn't read in years.

none of the moments in the book that where supposed to be emotional,,, felt emotional though. i don’t really care that there wasn’t a big climactic moment in the book, i care that it all just felt plain and emotionless. there was no ion behind the project.

and as far as character development in the book goes, just because they weren’t super developed in the show doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t have been in the book either. books have so much more opportunity to give insight on those things, even through 1st person point of view, but it just wasn’t taken. just because character development in the musical wasn’t so great, doesn’t mean that it had to be bad in the book as well.

and my thoughts on there’s being “another side” of connor that nobody knew about is that,, there wasn’t one. the whole point of the show is that evan is lying the whole time about how great of a person connor was. the show actually does just fine with showing how little evan actually knew about connor by creating that contrast between real and fake connor. the book just destroys this by implying that connor could’ve actually been as nice as evan said he was, and creates this allusion that evan actually knew him better than he thought.

Maybe you're right, it's been a while since I've read the book, and I don't know much about writing. However, I do think the book did a better job at making it clear that Evan didn't know connor because it made it clear that even his family didn't know him or the things he was going through. Either way, this seems like it's getting a bit heated and so I'd like to end on this note. It does not matter, in the end, whether you like the musical or the movie or the book the best, what matters is that you like the story, and that you took something of value from it.
