background information

when zachary started primary school, he was lacking at being socially interactive with other children. he would be sat at the far right corner of the playground colouring in a colouring book singing about how he was going to be a wizard one day. people around him would tell him that it was all fantasy and that he was being childish for his age. kids from ages 6-10 would chant awful nicknames at him and throw spit balls into his wavy hair during class.

his family would tell him that he would have a better life in the future but to him that was the fantasy. “people wouldn’t accept me” he said to himself every single night as he laid there on his bed covering himself up with his white bedsheets.

this whole bullying dilemma continued until his parents told him they all had to move to london. coming from a child who only ever knew bristol, this was a huge deal. he was excited. he always wanted a do over and this would be a perfect opportunity to do so

after two weeks, his bags were packed and off he and his family went. once they made it to london, zachary’s once ‘bullied by others’ life became worse.

on the first day of his new primary school, someone called him a danger to society. he didn’t understand what he was doing wrong. he was the kind of kid to smile at others...

‘do i have to be punished for this?’ he would write in his small yellow notebook.

‘does my mentality of being kind to others seem...not socially acceptable to these london kids? i can’t go a day without someone teasing me for being too girly and gay which im not. i just need a sign of hope...just one’ he would write with tears slipping down from his eyes. he became a very sentimental person after these unfortunate occurrences.

ah yes, secondary school. for zachary it was a stressful and rather depressing time. he made some friends who turned out to be toxic later on in life. he was the top student of his year which the other kids envied. he even once got pushed into a locker for being a “smart ass”

at this point of his life he was descending. both mentally and physically. he would eat less at the dinner table and tell these awful lies which made his mouth go dry and his mind ache.

at the age of 14, he was suffering from depersonalisation disorder which is the feeling of becoming less attached to ones self. he would look at himself in the mirror and not see themselves but instead a scary creature looking back at them. his vision would also be distorted and he always felt like he was spaced out.

at age 16, he suffered with severe depression as well. he would have the most terrible depressive episodes which resulted in constant tears, eternal/mental pain, objects close to him being thrown around his room and numbness. he would have to lock himself up his room and constantly be writing poems to help feel more at ease. they never helped. they actually made things worse.

after many months of this unhealthy cycle he got himself into learning how to draw and started to colour again but with more than just a simple 24 pack of crayola crayons. a month after, he learned to plant succulents and herbs which kept him productive enough. every single morning he would walk to the nearest coffee shop and order tea with a tiny pastry. he would always be drawing pictures of his plants from back home and people he found attractive. some were girls. some were boys.

his sixth form was a bit of a blur. he wasn’t even in sixth form for that long since his parents decided to move once again but this time to america. he had just turned 17 as well. he wasn’t to keen on the idea of moving countries at first but after being there, he got use to hearing the american accents and time zone.

very kind and lovely people could come up to him asking him where he bought his outfit or how being from the uk felt like which made him feel more accepted.

there were always gay couples just walking around the corridors of his high school holding up small rainbow flags with glitter all over their cheeks. it would make zachary feel really jittery.

being in america made him feel more welcomed and normal. sure he still suffers with depersonalisation and there’s always that constant voice in the back of his mind telling him that he has to lie and chest in order to be likeable but he knows there’s good people out there. someone will pick him up when he lands on his feet. someone will make him a cup of tea and run him a bath whenever he is at his all time lows. he knows people will be there for him.

he knows that people will also not like him but...he thinks it’s okay.
