Once a top student at Kamii University, Rika Kurobane was known for her bright personality and fierce loyalty to her best friend — Touka Kirishima. The two had met in secret through an underground literature club, where Rika’s love of dark fantasy stories unknowingly brought her closer to the world of ghouls. Though Rika remained unaware of Touka’s true nature, she often felt that her friend carried a burden too heavy for a teenager to bear.

Everything changed one rainy evening when Rika took a shortcut through the 11th Ward. She was ambushed and captured by Noro, a silent, mask-wearing enforcer of Aogiri Tree. Instead of killing her outright, Noro experimented — injecting her with a rare concentration of Rc cells harvested from deceased ghouls. The agony was unimaginable. Her body twisted under the invasive cellular fusion, and her once-gentle demeanor cracked.

She was reborn — not as a half-ghoul, but as a synthetic kagune bearer, a dark experiment in replicating the elegance and deadliness of a butterfly kagune. Rose-hued and deceptive in beauty, her kagune became her most feared feature — spreading like wings from her back as she hunted both humans and ghouls alike.

When Touka finally found her again, it was too late. Rika had embraced the pain, convinced that everyone — even her old friend — had abandoned her to die. Her heart now hardened by betrayal and suffering, she took on the name "Kurocho" (Black Butterfly), and aligned herself with rogue ghouls splintered from Aogiri, seeking revenge against both humans and ghouls for her cursed rebirth.

She’s a villain now — but deep in her twisted gaze, Touka still sees the friend she once laughed with under rainy skies.
