”my mother told everyone that my father was from the stars. she had cancer so everyone thought she was delusional.”
”peter…”
”look, i would love to believe this, i really would but you left the most wonderful woman ever. to die! alone!”
”i didn’t want to leave your mother, peter! if i don’t return regularly to my planet and the light within it, this form will wither and perish.”
”so why didn’t you come back? why did you send yondu, a criminal of all people, to come and fetch me?”
”i loved your mother, peter! i couldn’t stand to set foot on an earth where she wasn’t living, you can’t imagine what that’s like!”
”i know exactly what that feels like! i had to watch her die!”
- peter quill and ego
in my opinion, this conversation between them was more heartbreaking to watch than where ego itted to giving meredith brain cancer. peter’s emotion in this scene was more raw, especially in the delivery of the line i underlined. there is a lot of death in the mcu, but most of those deaths are unrealistic. no one can relate to watching your husband die because he snapped a gauntlet of stones that saved the universe. but many kids have lost parents to cancer, and had their other parent refuse to stick by them. although the whole celestial and space aspect doesn’t happen in real life, that wasn’t important in this dialogue. we weren’t watching a hero fighting with a living planet. this was a scared and hurt little boy, yearning for a father that wasn’t there.

”you are horrifying to look at. but that’s a good thing.”
”oh?”
”when you’re ugly and someone loves you, you know they love you for who you are. beautiful people never know how to trust.”
”well, then i am certainly grateful to be ugly!”
- drax and mantis
now this snippet doesn’t have anything to do with drax’s family, but i felt the need to include it just because of the line, “beautiful people never know how to trust”. that is such a truthful statement, ever present in our society. it’s an important message, and the wisest thing drax has ever said. perhaps even one of the wisest quotes from the mcu.
”those pools, they remind me of when i took my daughter to the forgotten reaches of my homeworld. she was like you.”
”disgusting?”
”innocent.”
- drax and mantis, continued
i know i’m sidetracking again, but i just have to point out one more thing before i discuss drax’s family. the relationship between him and mantis IS NOT and SHOULD NOT be romantic at all, in any way. he specifically said that mantis reminds him of his daughter in this scene. i really hope no one on here ships them. thank you for listening to my ted talk.
the saddest part of this scene wasn’t drax’s lines, or mantis’s, but their actions. while talking about his family, mantis reached out to feel his emotions, and immediately burst into tears. just looking at her reaction can we see the severity of his grief, and it’s a relief to see drax’s struggles taken seriously after being made comedy in the first guardians of the galaxy. a relief, but still painful to watch.

”you can fool yourself and everyone else, but you can’t fool me. i know who you are.”
”you don’t know anything about me loser.”
”i know everything about you. i know you play like you’re the meanest in the heart but actually you’re the most scared of all.”
”shut up!”
”i know you steal batteries you don’t need and you push away anyone who’s willing to put up with you because just a little bit of love reminds you of how big and empty that hole inside you actually is.”
”i said shut up!”
”i know them scientist who made you never gave a rat’s ass about you.”
”i’m serious dude!”
”just like my own damn parents who sold me, their own little baby to slavery. i know who you are boy, because you’re me.”
- yondu and rocket
again with drax, i was very happy to see rocket get taken with seriousness. this movie did a great job of doing that, for all the characters. it honestly set my expectations a lot higher for other marvel movies, as it proves they have the ability to have mental health discussions balanced with comedy and action.
i couldn’t underline just any thing, because everything yondu said hit me like a bullet. even rocket’s responses were just shattering. this whole scene was done to perfection, i couldn’t keep my eyes off the screen. here we finally got a glimpse into yondu’s backstory, and more detail to the personalities of the pair. it wasn’t out of place at all, and just fit right in that current stage of the plot. i’m looking forward to rocket getting character development, like they gave yondu. however i have a sinking feeling that development is going to be given leading up to rocket’s death, again similar to yondu.

”as a child my father would have gamora and me battle one another in training. every time my sister prevailed my father would replace a piece of me with machinery, claiming he wanted me to be her equal. but she won, again and again and again. never once refraining. because of them, i am this. so after i murder my sister, i will buy a worship with every conceivable instrument of death. i will hunt my father like a dog and i will tear him apart slowly, piece by piece, until he knows some semblance of the profound and unceasing pain i know every single day.”
- nebula
i absolutely love karen gillian. this monologue was truly so amazingly devastating to listen to. i don’t think viewers really understand how painful it is to be made into a robot. like that whole process is horrible and if anyone defends thanos at all, i hate you. i don’t care if you thought his goal was righteous, nebula’s story proves he is a monster. through and through.
”i don’t need you always trying to beat me!”
”i’m not the one who just flew across the universe just because i wanted to win!”
”do not tell me what i want!”
”i don’t need to tell you what you want it’s obvious!”
”you were the one who wanted to win and i just wanted a sister! you were all i had. but you were the one who needed to win. thanos pulled my eye from my head, and my brain from my skull, and my arm from my body… because of you.”
- nebula and gamora
while i love how nebula is the main focus of this dialogue, gamora is also speaking straight from the heart in this scene. usually gamora is collected, she thinks about what she’s going to say before she says it, but here she isn’t thinking. she’s just telling it exactly how she’s feeling it, and that’s important. honestly gamora and nebula have the most complicated sibling dynamic in the mcu, yelena and natasha a close second. i said what i said, don’t bring up thor & loki, because i didn’t mention them for a reason. again, joey expressing her opinion is the whole point of this blog.
”nebula, i was a little girl, trying to live day by day, not knowing or understanding what that meant to you. there are many other girls out there, like us. you can stay with us, and help them.”
- gamora
now gamora was actively thinking about what she was saying here, unlike before, but this is still from the heart, with the added benefit of knowledge. i think this perfectly summarizes the affect of thanos on gamora, but it could have been put into much more detail. she was completely on the spot with the bit about other girls around the galaxy, and when i heard this my mind immediately thought of natasha and yelena.

⌗ O1
i’m not including any quotes for this, because it’s not about the words that were spoken. it’s about the things that were left unsaid. this end to the movie was just me pouring out all of the emotions i had been gathering throughout the film, and it was heart wrenching. i swear the people who wrote this deserve so much.
yondu’s death and peter’s realization was built up by the whole movie. everything was leading up to this. which made it hurt a million times more. so many people can relate to peter: only appreciating what they had when it’s too late. and also to yondu: pushing your loved ones away only leaves you to a life of pain. the lessons that were taken from this, and the deep connection that the two characters shared really just brought out the waterworks. thank god for speeches on both yondu and peter’s parts, because those glimpses into their inner feelings made this so much more impactful. job well done.
while peter was the main aspect of yondu’s funeral, the ravagers’ role was key as well. the fireworks was such a beautiful touch to a heartbreaking sequence, and somehow managed to make me feel even more sad. them finally seeing that yondu didn’t fail them was truly leading me into a world of pain. but good pain, where i knew everything was okay in the end. i was also really glad they gave the whistle to kraglin. he is such a cool side character, who i wish to see more of. he was the only one who deserved yondu’s whistle, and it’s good no one decided to screw that up.
lastly, and i think the biggest reason i was balling until the end credits was the song choice. father and son by cat stevens was just the nail in the coffin. not only did the song encom the mood of the funeral, but i hold a personal connection to it. father and son is the song that my own father dedicates to my brother, and plays it a lot to bother him. so i associate it with happy, joyful memories. basically when i heard it come on in such a sad moment, my heart was being pulled into two different directions as i cried it out. which was actually a great experience. it was a spur of the moment decision to rewatch guardians of the galaxy volume 2, and it’s safe to say rediscovering this jewell is just what i needed. highly recommend going on disney+ and streaming it now (with a box of tissues handy)!
