Spoilers ahead for my personal series, Thunderbolts: Tales of Heroes (the first of a possible trilogy). Pyro is currently helping with Beta reading but if you also wish to become a Beta reader; by all means, let me know.

Her breath hitched.

Get away! They had to get away!

Their arms and legs were screaming at them, anything but used to running in this position for so long.

Their elbow buckled; sending them skidding through the snow. They coughed and spat, tail lashing.

Their head did a near 1-80.

No one had followed them. Probably too slow to keep up. In any case, the falling snow should cover their tracks in time.

They had to keep moving.

Find help, if they were lucky. Maybe a place to hunker down and think things through.

A wave of nausea slammed into them when they stood.

They had to move. Now!

Jen shook her head at the information this place had dug up.

She blinked, looking down at her hands. They morphed in a sudden flash, sporting dark scales and black claws. Another blink, and they were human once more.

She let out the breath she hadn’t realised she’d been holding.

On the one hand, she was sure she was going to kiss Matt if she ever saw him again.

On the other, she was thoroughly miffed at herself for coming here alone.

Replaying the memory over in her head, she looked off in the direction her beastly self had came from.

If she could retrace her steps, maybe she’d find what she had been running from…

Thud

…or not.

Jen’s head snapped up. Her eyes darted back and forth, eventually landing on an alleyway nearby. She tensed when quick footsteps approached.

Needless to say, she wasn’t expecting to recognise the person who emerged.

“…Matt?”

He didn’t have his cane but he seemed to know damn well where he was going.

He put a finger to his lips. Grabbing her arm, he all but dragged her into the building with the fluttering tarp.

“Matt, what’re you…!?” she hissed, keeping her voice low as he pulled her down behind a wall; but he only shushed her again.

His head was tilted slightly; listening to something outside.

“Second building to the right,” he whispered. “Tell me what you see.”

Jen blinked at him dumbly, but stuck her head above the window frame anyway.

Nothing.

She was about to tell him as such when she spotted something behind said building. She squinted slightly, blinking rapidly to make sure she wasn’t seeing things.

Nope, that shadow on the wall was definitely moving.

Unlike Matt, what emerged from that alleyway made her jaw drop.

Matt looked in her direction expectantly as she ducked back down.

“Oh good Lord…” she breathed in disbelief.

Both stiffened when something massive dragged itself through the street. Despite every fibre of her being screaming at her not to, Jen peeked her head back over the window sill.

A massive serpent slithered past the building. Wings were tucked against its sides, the light reflecting off it’s pitch black scales.

The beast that trailed behind it she recognised more easily.

It was the rhino.

She ducked back down to relay the information back to Matt. He gave a sombre nod.

With a wave of his hand, he kept low to the ground as he retreated deeper into the building.

Jen gave one last glance at the scene outside before bolting after him. How she found it easier to gallop on all fours was beyond her.
