What is the Destroyer?

The Destroyer was a magical, emotionless mechanical device built by Odin to defend the Asgardian vaults (primarily Odin’s Vault) and to be used as a weapon against its master’s enemies. The automaton can complete any given task without question regardless of the duration of the mission, or the obstacles it faces. But, the Destroyer still obeys the ruler of Asgard and wielder of Gungnir no matter who the current ruler of the machine may be at any time.

Serving Odin:

Upon the arrival of three Frost Giants sneaking into Asgard’s weapon vaults with the help of Loki Laufeyson to steal the Casket of Ancient Winters, Odin sensed the intrusion and signaled the Destroyer to attack them. After Thor had been banished from Asgard because of his actions on Jotunheim, Loki (who was disguised as Odin while Odin was falling into Odinsleep) sent the Destroyer to Earth to kill Thor and his friends on Earth.

Battle of Puente Antiguo:

The Destroyer was sent through the Bifrost Bridge from Asgard to Puente Antiguo, New Mexico on Earth. The machine was met by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Phil Coulson and Jasper Sitwell along with others who tried to rebuttal the attack but failed when the Destroyer attacked them and their cars before moving onto the small town.

The Destroyer began on a rampage in the town, destroying everything in its path before it encountered the Warriors Three, Lady Sif, and Volstagg. The Destroyer was stabbed by Sif after it had thrown Volstagg onto a car. The Destroyer quickly recovered from Sif’s stab and blasted her off of itself before blasting the four of them off into different buildings including Volstagg who was badly hurt after the blast. Thor finally approached the Destroyer when everyone was out of its harm and begged Loki through the Destroyer to take his life for the safety of his friends and the town.

The Destroyer powered down its beam but mortally wounded Thor with a smack to the face, leaving Thor to be seemingly dead while the Destroyer walked back to the Bifrost site. But, Thor’s self-sacrifice granted back his lost powers when Mjolnir returned to his possession. Thor used his regained powers to knock over the Destroyer after it had attempted to blast Thor. Once the Destroyer stood back up, Thor spun the machine in a tornado before launching his hammer into the Destroyer’s head, shutting it down completely and permanently.

Coulson’s Revenge (Disassembled Destroyer):

Coulson’s Revenge was a prototype weapon used by Phil Coulson, made from the disassembled Destroyer.

The Avengers:

During Loki’s escape on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, Coulson arrived on scene with his weapon made from the Destroyer when Loki had escaped the cell Thor had trapped him in, telling Loki to step away from the controls. Loki stabbed Coulson before Coulson could shoot an energy beam from the weapon, leaving him dying on the ground. But, Coulson shot Loki with the Revenge with his second attempt, sending the god of mischief tumbling through the wall.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 1.22: Beginning of the End:

Phil Coulson faced off against John Garrett during S.H.I.E.L.D’s assault on the Cybertek facility where the Deathlok Soldiers were planned to be produced. Nick Fury arrived to assist and delivered Coulson’s Revenge to Phil who used it against the Centipede Soldiers that were protecting John Garrett.

The Destroyer was collected by S.H.I.E.L.D. after Thor had defeated it. S.H.I.E.L.D. got the Destroyer’s energy to reactivate and Phil Coulson ordered the machine to disband to eventually turn it into a prototype weapon which was a gun that could shoot energy blasts similar to the ones of the Destroyer. Phil Coulson later used the weapon against Loki.

Powers and Abilities:

Advanced Strength:

The Destroyer’s large size in construction gives the automaton intimidating physical power strong enough to bat away a car hurled at it, swat Thor (while he was human) back several feet in one hit, and send Volstagg flying with obvious ease. With as little as a backhanded strike with an open hand, the Destroyer can kill a human being with immense strength and resilience. The Destroyer can potentially kill a Frost Giant or an Asgardian seeing as the Warriors Three and Sif combined stood no chance against the Destroyer.

Odinforce Blast:

The Destroyer is powered by the Odinforce that resembles a fiery energy that can be unleashed through an opening in its head. The facial structure retracts and the energy discharge lances out in a wide, orange-ish/white-ish colored fire in a beam. The beam is extremely powerful and the touch of it is enough to vaporize a living being, blast a car into pieces, or destroy a building completely just by looking at it. Not many people can withstand these blasts except gods like Thor or others with otherworldly powers.

Advanced Durability:

The Destroyer was constructed of otherworldy materials that makes it highly resistant to any damage. When pierced by Sif’s Asgardian lance, it was still able to function and showed no signs of damage. Mjølnir is the only known weapon capable of harming it.

Sensory Seeing and Partial Possession:

The Destroyer is linked to whoever holds Gungnir and recognizes the spear’s holder as its master, or person in charge of giving it commands. The wielder can pilot the automaton as well as watch whatever transpires around the armor even if they are separated as far as the Nine Realms. It can be stopped by an attack on its master if they left themselves vulnerable for an attack.

Backward Positioning:

The Destroyer can move its armor around to the opposite side without having to physically turn around. This was used when Sif tried to stab the Destroyer through its back but it quickly repositioned itself by turning its armor around to blast her.
