Willow's parents were well respected paleontologists, though their focus was on dinosaur remains, it the later years of their lives they were tasked with something else. They didn't see any harm in doing what they were asked at the time, until it came back to kill them.

Eryk and Mercy were unknowingly working for Hydra in the last few years they were alive. They were tasked to find a hidden temple within a cavern that was located in a very hard to get to ravine.

Eryk found out who they were working for and what they wanted to do when they got the location of the Temple, he'd tell Mercy who insisted on leaving.

Once they packed their bags to leave, they were pushed off the ravine by Hydra spies.

The researchers told Willow that her parents died because they accidentally fell to their deaths in the ravine.

Hydra then used Willow to get to the Temples, as she was unknowing of why they needed her to go down there.

You see Hydra was after a specific few items containing powerful magic, they were planning to use to reign parts of the world.

However once Willow and her team arrived at the Temple they disovered that only people of specific descend can gain these abilities, and those people were incredibly rare.

As if it was meant to be, Willow was one of these rare human descendants, and when she opened one of thes objects she had gained the ability to shapeshift and use some kind of ancient magic.

Gaining the powers came at a cost, she was out in the cave for a few days as the team she was with was actually Hydra spies who thought she was dead, leaving her as it was part of the plan to kill her anyway, leaving her here without anything to get out.

Eventually Willow woke up, disovering her ability as she tried to escape; shapeshifting into an eagle to fly out. She'd fly for days eventually arriving at a shack in the woods, which seemed abandoned, the landing wasn't exactly perfect; shapeshifting back into her human form 3 meters above ground and falling down with a sliding landing in the dry dirt. Again being out dor a few days.
