From the desk of Andre Bourgeois, Mayor of Paris
To the citizens of Paris,
As you know, there has been a recent outbreak of a virus spread by infected butterflies, called the Akuma Virus. There is no reason to fear this, there are already teams working to prevent outbreaks and contain anyone suffering the disease.
As many people may know, the Akuma Virus can be contracted when an infected butterfly touches you or any item on your person and spreads the Akuma Virus to you. Infected butterflies are more attracted to strong, negative emotions, so the best protection against the Virus is to remain calm and neutral.
This team is the Akuma Virus Control Team (AVCT) is highly trained and has funding from the Government of , and teams are being mobilised all across the country, and preventative measures are being taken.
If you wish to enlist for this team, all information is included in the following packet, including phone numbers and details for courses of Anger Management, Positivity and other options, details for the Team Managers.
If you know of anyone suffering the Akuma Virus, or you have seen a victim, please report it to the hotline on the number listed on the next page of the letter.
This is not an issue for major concern; panic will only elevate the situation. If you have any concerns, please one of the hotlines or find more information on the Official Government Website.
Thank you for your attention,
Andre Bourgeois
Mayor of Paris
The letter was sent out to every house in Paris, some letters travelling even further, nearly to the next city.
There was mass panic in the air, everyone afraid for themselves and their city. People avoided each other, not wanting to come into with someone who could make them negative. Jobs were abandoned and streets were emptied. The city went into self-imposed lock down. The letter’s reminder not to panic was ignored.
Marinette was walking through the abandoned streets on her way to school, her eyes flickering from side to side, watching out for any possible threats, such as an Akuma, while she walked. School was still mandatory for students, but there were more measures in place, such as containment units for students who got angry.
If you were put in one of the units, you were sent to the AVCT and came back the next day, creepily calm for a few days afterwards.
Just as she was about to cross the street, Marinette noticed an old man standing in the middle of the road, waving an Akuma victim away from him with his walking stick. The Akuma in front of him was dressed like a mime, flickering between his villain costume and normal clothes, and seemed to be trying to hit the old man with an invisible weapon.
Without thinking of her own safety, Marinette ran towards the old man, grabbing him by his upper arm and dragging him away, slamming her hand into the Akuma Warning button near the crossing lights, causing an alarm to blare and everyone on the street to scramble to safety. An AVCT helicopter flew overhead and dropped a net on the Akuma, tightening the ropes and pulling the net and its cargo back up into the military style helicopter. Everything slowly calmed down, and people resumed their business.
“Thank you, young lady. Have you ever heard of the AVCT, the helicopters that just took that Akuma away?”
“Yes, I have, everyone has. They are the team in charge of keeping Paris safe. Everyone knows about them,” Marinette replied, unsure why this old man was asking if she had heard of the team.
“I would like to offer you a place on that team, if you are willing to accept it. Oh, and I almost forgot. My name is Master Fu.”
Marinette froze in shock. Her? On a team that protected the entire city? Clumsy Marinette? There was no way Master Fu was serious. She had heard of him, too. He was one of the people who ran the AVCT. Why was he out on the streets without being protected from Akumas? “I don’t know if I can, I mean, I have school, and everything else on, and I’m way too clumsy to protect anyone…”
Master Fu laughed at Marinette’s hesitance. Even though she was unsure of herself, he knew she would be a perfect Ladybug. He smiled and said, “Don’t worry, Miss Marinette, you have all the qualities to be Ladybug. I can’t force you to the team, but here is the card for the team if you change your mind.”
Marinette took the card and looked down at it. It was a simple card with an octagon printed onto it, decorated with what Marinette recognised as the Chinese pattern her mother had hanging in their house, near the kitchen. Before now, Marinette had just thought it was Sabine decorating their home, but maybe there was an underlying meaning to it?
Marinette looked up from the card, her mouth opening to ask Master Fu why the pattern on this octagon was the same as the pattern in her house, or how he knew her name, but she couldn’t. Master Fu was gone, not a trace left behind of where he might have gone.
A bell chimed out over the street and Marinette realised that she was late; the conversation with Master Fu had eaten up too much of her time. Marinette grasped her bag handles tightly and sprinted across the street and up the stairs, heading for her classroom.
Just as she flew in the door, Ms Bustier sat down at her desk, looking out over the class. “Marinette. Where were you?”
“I got caught in an Akuma attack. Sorry.”
Marinette walked up to her seat and sat down, setting her bag against the familiar chair. Alya threw her arms around Marinette, hugging her. Akuma attacks were always worrying, but it was worse when someone in the class was involved. “I thought you weren’t coming to school!”
“I was fine, there was just an Akuma. The AVCT took care of it, don’t worry.” Marinette shook her head, not wanting anyone to worry about her anymore. She wasn’t hurt, so it didn’t matter.
Though there still was the question of what she would do about the offer to become Ladybug and help catch the Akumas. She didn’t want to tell anyone, but she knew she would have to talk to at least her mother the next time she saw her, after all, she might know something that could help Marinette make up her mind.
The day continued on without any more interruptions, but Marinette’s mind kept circling back to the card with the octagon, not concentrating on anything else. When the final bell rang, Marinette threw her bag over her shoulder and walked out, so lost in her thoughts she forgot she was walking home with Alya, until Alya ran up behind her and threw her arm around her shoulders.
“Did you forget about walking home with me?” Alya was holding her bag in the hand that wasn’t around Marinette’s shoulders, the strap brushing the ground.
“Sorry, there’s just something on my mind.”
“Marinette, there has been something on your mind since you got to school this morning. Was it about the Akuma?”
“Yeah, something happened after it and I just need to think about it.” Marinette kept walking while her mind kept circling back to the card and Master Fu. She was on auto-pilot, and didn’t even notice when she walked into the bakery.
“You know you can tell me anything, right?” Alya dropped her arm, slinging her bag over her shoulders, she followed Marinette into the bakery, letting the door swing shut behind her, the bell silencing. Sabine looked up from behind the counter and smiled at both girls.
“Hi, Alya! What brings you to the bakery?”
“It’s Tuesday again, and school just ended,” Alya smiled at Sabine.
“It’s Tuesday already? It seems like you were here just yesterday. Never the less, would you like-,” Sabine was cut off by a large explosion outside, followed by people screaming.
Another Akuma.
Without thinking, Marinette ran to the window and peaked out, watching the chaos on the street. The AVCT was nowhere in sight, and the button to call them was smashed to pieces. The other button was in the park.
Marinette flew out the door and sprinted towards the park, almost diving through the gates to avoid the Akuma’s fire, this time a villain who seemed to be making people disappear into pixels completely! Just as she smashed her hand into the button, it disappeared into a cloud of pixels. Marinette dropped to the ground and covered her head, afraid she would be next, but everything was silent.
When she looked up, Marinette saw a pile of blue and pink glitter and a girl in a bright red costume with black gloves and shoes, a helmet over her head with two antennae sitting on the top. When she saw Marinette, she walked over. “Hi, my name is Tikki and I work for the AVCT. You’re Marinette, right?”
“Yeah, that’s me.” Marinette pushed herself up off the ground.
“I’ve been sent to ask if you’ve thought about ing the team. The Akumas are getting more serious.”
Marinette looked at the pile of sparkles where the Akuma had been, then back at Tikki. “Okay, I’ll .”
“Great! Your training begins on Friday. See you then!” Tikki turned and ran off, jumping onto a rooftop and disappearing from view. Marinette couldn’t believe it. She had just ed the AVCT.

I am actually so excited for this? Like I’ve been planning this for a while now and it’s finally happening.
