Injured Chipmunk

This morning, Charlie (my dog) found a chipmunk that didn’t seem to want to move.

After he was put back inside so he wouldn’t get in the way or risk possibly getting sick too (didn’t know what was wrong yet), I went to go check on it and it was moving!

Immediately when I saw it’s gait, I knew something was very wrong though.

The chipmunk wasn’t running properly and seemed to be struggling with it a great deal.

I got some gardening gloves to pick it up and put it in a shoebox, and I finally saw what the issue was. On its right side, there was a large wound. It looked like the chipmunk had been trying to groom it as well, as there was some blood on its face too. The poor thing seemed to give up when I got it into the shoebox to look it over. We had some plain walnuts available too, so I tried to give it a small piece to nibble on, but it didn’t seem to show any interest.

Despite the severity of the injury, I have hope that it will make it through.

After figuring out the issue, I knew it was too severe to try caring for and rehabilitating on my own, so we dropped it off at a wildlife hospital to get it the medical care it needs to hopefully make a full recovery.

They’re going to email us with its progress too, so who knows! We might have some updates!
