The Connemara Pony
The Connemara Pony is a pony that originated from Ireland. Their scientific name is Equus Ferus Caballus. The Connemara Pony is known for their athleticism, versatility, and good distribution.
Appearance
The Connemara Pony is typically 12.2-14.2 hands high(1 hand=4 inches). The most common coat colours include; grey, dappled grey, buckskin, and black. Unlike other pony’s the Connemara has a short head, deep broad ribs and strong backs.
Behaviour
The Connemara Pony is a very intelligent breed, known for their good temperament. The Connemara is a suitable for adults and children. Although they are a quiet breed, they can have a bouncy personality.
History
The Connemara Pony originates from Galway, Ireland. They originated in a harsh environment so they have muscles in perfect places for a sport horse. In the 18th century Arabian blood was added, and later they were crossed with Thoroughbreds and Hackneys, but crossbreeding stopped due to ‘losing the breed’. People believed the pony was related to the Scandinavian Pony, brought in by the Vikings. But the Connemara was also thought to be a descent of the Irish Hobby.
Uses
The Connemara Pony is an all round riding pony. The Connemara can be used for anything, but excels in jumping, so English events like eventing and showjumping is ideal. The Connemara Pony is also used in dressage, endurance riding, and harness.
