Marinette whirled around to find Adrien leaning against the doorway with a mischievous grin. The first thing she noticed was how handsome he was.Before she could speak, Nino flew out of nowhere and tackled him.
"You idiotic boy! Where were you?! You nearly scared me half to death!" Nino wouldn't let go and was crying tears of relief and joy.
Adrien straightened himself out and pried Nino arms off of him. "I'm fine." Adrien said with a light chuckle.
"Nino's right Adrien. What happened to you?" Alya asked.
A frown formed on Adrien's usual happy face." Father problems." An awkward silence filled the room. Everyone knew about Adrien's sensitivity to the topic of his family. He was still pretty sore from the loss of his mother.
"D-do you want to t-talk about it?" Marinette stammered. "Real smooth Marinette." she thought.
Adrien nodded and made his way to a cushioned couch. He ran a hand through his disheveled hair and sighed.
"So, I'm sure you all are aware of tonight's ball?" When everyone nodded, he continued. "Here's the thing...I don't want to marry Chloe and I don't want to become king."
Alya snorted. "Who would want to marry Chloe? She is literally the worst person to ever walk the planet."
Nino chimed in. "Dude, haven't you told your father that you do NOT and I emphasize on the word NOT want to marry Chloe?"
"That's why I couldn't meet up with Mari today. I tried to tell him, but he doesn't care." Adrien looked so miserable that Marinette couldn't stand it. All she ever wanted in life was for everyone else to be happy even if it costed her own happiness. She known Adrien long enough that she knew how to read his inner emotions even if he was a master at hiding them.
Adrien noticed Marinette's concern. "Hey, I'm gonna be okay." He wanted to desperately ask her something. Something that had his heart pounding for the past few hours. Adrien took a deep breath. "A-are you going to my ball tonight?" Hope filled his soul; praying that his crush was coming.
Marinette gave a sad smile. "I-I'm so sorry Adrien, but I can't. I have to help my parents tonight bake and cook all the food for the banquet." Despair and sadness crushed the inner hope. Adrien wanted to kick himself so badly for being such a fool.
"Oh, it's fine." He muttered sadly. This is why you don't hope for things Adrien. Hope is for suckers. He scolded himself.
Nino patted his back. "Bro, even though Mari can't make it; Alya and I will be there to cheer you on. You're gonna need the since you'll have to slow-dance with Chloe."
Adrien groaned. Life was really against him. "What fun." He sarcastically said.
This was going to be the worst night ever.
