Chapter 4: Courtyard

Tikki marched down the vacant academy hallway in an irritated huff with a melting ice pack in one hand, her ladybug-studded lunch bag in the other.

The giant red welt she had received rather unwillingly on the back of her forehead wasn’t getting any smaller, and it was annoying the hell out of her. Not to mention how noticeable it was, like it was trying to show off.

“What a disgrace…” She muttered to herself. She was supposed to be this institution’s great student council president. The one everyone looked up to. The one everyone wanted to be. Yet here she was on the first day back from September break, already being sent to the nurse’s office.

The ruby-haired girl couldn’t recall how she had ended up on that cushiony pink bed with papery sheets. Her last fuzzy memory was of trying to stop a large silhouette crashing into her, an erupting spasm of stinging pain coming from her head, and a chorus of panicky voices.

After that, everything went black until she was being greeted by the somewhat friendly old nurse who had pushed the redhead to drink some sparkling water with a slightly creepy smile on her face.

A burst of pain suddenly coursed through her body. Tikki hissed, dropping her lunch bag with a clunk upon the tiled ground. She winced as she tried to staunch the sore injury, trying not to scream out in agony, so she wouldn’t bother the other classrooms.

She wanted nothing more than to shout out to the world how furious she was, and how she felt like throwing a few chairs into the brick walls.

The sapphire-eyed girl sighed as she controlled her unfamiliar flaring temper, “What’s wrong with me? Up until now, I would’ve never thought of-”

Tikki stopped mid sentence as she gazed from a short distance at a certain figure she was definitely no stranger to.

Her first thoughts were, ‘It’s him! That’s the guy who was fighting with those boys earlier today! And, the jerk who gave me this giant bump!’

Until her mind processed what she was actually seeing, ‘Stunning…’

And in no possible way was she wrong.

The delinquent student was leaning back casually, using his subtle muscular arms for with his long legs dangling over the sides of the granite bench in the courtyard, a pair of earbuds playing music into his pointed ears. He had shaggy, starless black hair. It matched his messily draped on sweatshirt and the dark shades he was still wearing.

Tikki gulped when he swerved his head over in her direction and pounced back into the shadows of the verdant green foliages, carefully trying not to make any noise.

Wait, why was she so nervous? Why was she even hiding?

She realized that the metal door that led to the courtyard was usually locked and today it seemed to be was nudged aside, almost unnoticeably.

So, that’s how he got in. That little sneak.

“Oi!” His baritone voice rang out, spooking her so badly that her body jerked and she almost had a heart attack on the spot.

“I know you’re out there! Show yourself!” He growled. How the heck did he see her?

Tikki didn’t know what to think when she heard his voice for the first time, but she decided that she liked the sound of it.

Her knees froze for a second before nearly turning to jello, but she clutched her delicate hands into fists and bravely forced her legs to surge forward. When she was face to face with the enigmatic boy, she had to keep herself from gasping out loud.

The midnight-haired boy had straightened his back out before slouching and remained seated on the bench, but he had also removed his sunglasses.

His eyes were like pools of emerald gems glittering in the spotlight. Eyes that held an inkling of mischief and a dash of intelligence. Eyes with a zeal for adventure. When Tikki’s own aqua blue irises met his forest green ones, a spark seemed to ignite like the embers of a blazing fire.

Once she realized that she was staring, she whirled her head to the side, her face a flushed red tint.

“Oh, it’s just you, Prez.” The boy did nothing to mask his surprise.

“It’s Tikki…” She replied sheepishly at the nickname, “And you are?”

The raven-haired student grinned impishly, “Name’s Plagg.”

“Plagg?” She had never heard such a strange name before.

“That’s what I said, didn’t I?” His lipped sarcasm made her ears turn the same color as her cheeks, and her usual calm composure flinched inside of her. What was it about this guy that made her tick like clockwork? It was a mystery she couldn’t solve.

“So Prez,” Plagg continued since she didn’t reply while still using her title way too casually for her liking, “What brings you all the way out here? Shouldn’t you be out at the buffet with all your other friends?”

“I saw the courtyard was open and went to inspect it. Injured or not, I’m still this academy’s student council president.” It was partly true at least. No way was she going to it that she was kind of stalking the guy like a creep.

Plagg narrowed his calculating green eyes like he didn’t believe her but shrugged it off, “Such a goody two shoes.”

Tikki glared at him, not amused, “Heh, speak of the devil. Say, how’d you get in here anyways? This area of the school should be locked-up to the brim.”

A shiny bronze key with a short metallic chain swung back and forth like a pendulum on his long fingers, “Snagged them from that no good janitor, half asleep without a second to boot. Taking this little thing,” He held up the key, “was like taking candy from a baby.”

Tikki couldn’t hide the shock on her face when she saw that key. How could he have possibly gotten that specific key?! The janitor here never lets it out of his sight yet this new transfer student managed to take it, and even worse, he made it look easy. Like he had done it multiple times before.

“I could report you for this y’know,” She started. “You did openly confess to me that you did it.”

Plagg groaned, “Aw, cut me some slack here, Prez. I was literally dying in that lunchroom. Too many people and terrible food, no offense. Besides, you owe me.”

Her mouth was agape now, “Excuse me? I don’t owing someone like you any favors at the moment.”

“Who do you think carried you to the nurse’s office?” He asked suddenly.

Tikki blinked,“What does that have anything to do with-”

“It was me.”

She blinked again, “Eh?! Y-You carried m-me to…” She was at a loss for words.

Plagg’s mouth quirked at the edges, thoroughly enjoying her reaction, “That’s right. It was actually pretty easy considering how much you’re a pipsqueak after all.”

A vein popped on the side of her head. She had always heard smartyass comments about her undergrowed height. It wasn’t her fault that he was at a whopping six feet while she was still barely past four.

“Anyways, you should be living life at the fullest right now since you managed to survive our little encounter. I’ll commend you for it after a few thank yous and favors.” He gestured toward her.

The nerve of him, asking for things when it was all his fault in the first place.

Why was she even wasting time here? Trixx was probably waiting for her there and so were her other friends. So, why won’t she leave? What’s this special something that this boy has that draws her to him like a moth to a lamp? She had no reason to be here.

“Well, I would’ve,” Tikki dared boldly, “if it wasn’t for a certain someone, I would’ve been having the time of my life right now, hanging with my friends. But no! I got stuck with a blotchy bruise on the back of my head and a sarcastic know-it-all!”

She didn’t know where this all came from. Maybe it was all bottled up inside throughout the day, but she just snapped.

“Hey! It wasn’t my fault that you were such a klutz and crashed into that locker!” He retorted angrily.

“Did you have memory loss or something because I can recall that you were the one who pushed me into that locker!” Tikki shot back.

“That other jerk shoved me!” Plagg defended himself, getting right in her face.

“You shouldn’t have been fighting in the hallways in the first place!” She shouted, leaning in so close that their noses almost brushed against one another.

He gritted his teeth and growled in return before sitting back down on the bench, breathing in exasperatedly, “I was helping them.”

Tikki cocked her head, “Hm?” She queried, waiting for him to elaborate.

“The two victims there. Two boys, one with green hair, the other purple. Kinda hard to miss them. They were being bullied, near death, and I was trying to save them. It got out of hand, and then you got caught up in it.”

Her mind suddenly conjured up an image of two wounded boys; one with purple hair, the other green.

Guilt suddenly made her stomach drop down a pit, “I’m sorry. I didn’t know-”

“It’s okay, you couldn’t have known. You fell unconscious immediately after that bastard shoved me into you. Scared him off I think, when he saw you weren’t moving. Or he could have just been trying to save his own skin. In a way, you kinda saved us. So thanks, I guess.”

This boy...He’s an anomaly. Completely different from every other boy she’s met. What was it that made him so special that he could turn anyone’s insides to mush with just a few simple words?

“Say, wanna listen to some music?” He inquired, holding out one of the earbuds.

“What’s this? Mr. Cool’s asking me to listen to music with him?” The redhead joked, her anger forgotten.

“Shut up. It’s my way of repaying you.”

“Yeah, yeah…” Tikki took the earbud he held out and placed in her ear, hiding the giddy smile growing on her face.

Sorry if our main kwamis seem a bit OOC. I wasn’t exactly sure how this chapter would turn out since we don’t get a lot of screen time for these little cuties so I had to use my own mind and think about how they’d react. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Does the story seem cliche to you guys? I was mostly worried about that since this chapter was kinda based off one of those fantasy tropes in one of my favorite anime, cheers to you if you can guess which one :smirk:

Until next time, Queen Out!
