Chapter 1:Scarlet Ladybugs

Tikki clicked the power button on the side of her phone again for what felt like the hundredth time to check the digital clock numbers on the lock screen. It was 6:50. Her best friend, Trixx, was late again.

The redhead sighed. Same old, same old. Her tawny-haired friend just couldn’t resist having her seemingly rather large breakfast every morning as usual.

She glances for a second at her cellular device to giggle silently to herself at the girly, rosette pink ladybugs on her background. She always did consider the little, six-legged insects her favorite animal.

The scarlet-haired girl squeaked softly and suddenly when she realized something was crawling over her rosette pink fingernails.

Peering closer, Tikki saw to her delight that it was a minuscule ladybug traveling over her hand. She watched the little bug move it’s tiny, frail legs all over her arm.

Recalling a myth about ladybugs being lucky, Tikki closed her eyes and made a private wish. Her aquamarine irises fluttered open as she gazed and smiled as the insect opened it’s crescent-like shaped wings before flying away into the breeze.

“Tikki!” A frantic voice called out from the right side of the street; hindering the peaceful moment. “Over here!”

Tikki whirled her head around; shaking her head jokingly at the sight before her.

Her tawny brown-haired friend was flailing her hand above her head in a desperate wave; bolting across the concrete sidewalk. In the midst of it all, Trixx was shoving a cloud white powdered, jelly munchkin into her waiting mouth.

The maroon backpack was sloppily draped over only one shoulder, her tangerine, long-sleeved shirt with the white outline and jet black skirt were rumpled, and the laces of her ankle high, matching sneakers were loose.

Her ginger brown curls with dyed orange at the edges was unruly and out of place. Her violet irises had bags under them and her tan skin was slightly faded; not it’s usual rich tone.

Trixx panted, her hands were using her knees as as she was out of breath in front of the morning bird beside her. Although, even if she was still bending her knees, the brunette still had a couple of inches on her 4 feet tall friend.

Tikki snickered, covering her mouth with her hand to smolder the laughs. “Late as usual it seems.”

“Sorry...I’m...late...” Trixx forced herself to speak in between gasps of oxygen. She shoved the light-up screen of her phone into her friend’s face forcing her to read.

Tikki blinked twice to adjust her eyes to the blinding limelight. “What’s this?” She inquired; squinting at the endless barrage of comments and emojis.

The redhead pried the electronic from her friend’s tan fingers and chiseled nails. She struggled to make out the blurry letters and symbols as more kept popping up.

Finally selecting a few, the cerulean-eyes girl kept her thoughts to herself at the...unusual names and peculiarly strange comments.

CuteGlitter835:OOH LA LA WHO’S THAT HUNK!

GirlyCurls69:OMG Girl, who’s the hottie beside you?!

Tikki cringed at the collision of pretty much the exact same comments about the post. What the heck could have the fan girls so fired up?

Scrolling upward, Tikki’s sky blue orbs widened to the size of saucers at the picture in the post. The image was of their friend Pollen with her crystalline sunglasses over her loose yet stylish golden curls beside a boy Tikki had never seen before.

The strawberry-haired girl couldn’t see much of the mysterious boy’s face due to the sunlight lighting up the background; blurring his face.

His eyes also weren’t showing due to his own onyx black sunglasses, but Tikki saw a few locks of coal black hair shoved under a grey beanie with vertical line designs. The dark-haired boy’s chin was also concealed by a thick, matching scarf.

The young man had a cocky smirk; playful enough to swoon the ladies and held out his index and middle fingers as a peace sign symbol. He was most definitely very handsome underneath that mask of glass. But, Tikki wasn’t falling for it.

She gently placed the phone back into the brunette’s hand in confusion as to why her friend would want to show her something as trivial as this.

“Is this why you were so late this morning?” Tikki inquired, chuckling internally at the ridiculousness of the situation.

Trixx furrowed her brow at the suggestive insult. “For your information, yes. Pollen’s photo had been the gossip of the day since midnight! The newsfeed kept piling up, and unfortunately I had to stay up nearly all night to figure out the deets.”

Tikki giggled again at her friend’s all night shifts as a high school journalist. The dark lavender-eyed girl was a writer at heart during the night and also a cuisine chef at soul during the day like Tikki herself.

Her friend worked with her adoptive family, the Foxxs’, at their mini business cafe, the Tricksy Fox. Tikki adored going there after grueling days of school and just ordering her usual, a small strawberry-flavored milkshake with lots of whipped cream and some chocolate chip cookies, from Trixx’s adoptive parents and siblings.

“So, what’s so important about this picture anyway? It doesn’t look that interesting to me,” Tikki stated matter-of-factly. “It just looks like Pollen hanging out with one of her friends from out of town, there’s nothing special about that.”

Trixx pouted. “Aw, c’mon Tiks! Even you have to it that he’s an absolute hottie. And that’s saying something since the expectations girls have around these parts are galaxies off the charts.”

Tikki quirked her eyebrows. “You do realize that about 70% of his face is covered right?” She asked quizzically. “Besides, I ain’t got time for boys.” The ruby-haired girl responded with a wink.

The fawn-haired girl rolled her eyes. “You say that, but we’re in high school now Tiks. There’s no telling when we’re gonna fall in love,” She pursed her lips. “Are you still going on about the time when-“

“No, this has nothing to do with that,” Tikki said hurriedly with a icy cold, harsh tone that sent the signal to change the topic. “I just...don’t feel like dating anyone at the moment.”

When Trixx didn’t respond, Tikki felt relieved and glad that her friend dropped the conversation. She didn’t need any unwanted memories flooding into her brain.

“By the way,” Trixx began anew. “How’s the bakery doing? I you saying something about you and your dad having money issues with the business being low recently and all.”

The apple-haired girl smiled sadly. “Yeah, we’ve both been pretty stressed out lately. My dad, more so than usual,” She sighed, exhausted. “Apparently, there’s a brand-new restaurant opening a couple of blocks away that’s been stealing away our daily dose of customers so earning money has been quite the hassle. That’s why I’ve been doing so many extra odd jobs recently to get some more money. It’s not much, but I’m sure it’ll help.”

Trixx tapped on her chin in deep thought which was rare. “Hm, but what kind of restaurant could be so popular as to capture the attention of so many people in such a short time since you did say they were new and all. I’d hate to think that the ratings there are actually better than the ones at the Amour Chanceux.”

Tikki shrugged, “All my dad told me was that the owners are one of the world’s most prestigious and affluent cooking industries out there so that might explain why they’re so in demand.”

Her friend groaned and began rubbing her head speedily like she was having a migraine. “Uh, all this information is making my head spin. Let’s start walking. After all, if we stand here any longer we’re gonna really get it from the teachers,” She shuddered as a burst of wind sent shivers down her spine. “Or, we’ll die first from this irritatingly freezing wind!”

The garnet-haired schoolgirl laughed joyfully. Tenderly, she pushed Trixx back on her heels of her feet before sprinting past her toward the school building; making sure the white laces of her high, rose red sneakers were tied.

“Race you there!” Tikki grinned; sticking out her tongue like a mischievous kid; grabbing into the straps of her polka-dot backpack to make sure it didn’t slip off her shoulders as she ran.

Trixx chortled back. “Oh, it is so on!” She yelled before racing for her;only being a few steps behind.

***

“Okay...I...give...up...,” Trixx huffed and puffed like the big, bad wolf in the story, The Three Little Pigs. “You...win...”

Through the sweaty precipitation drooling down her back and wetting her red and black polka-dotted blouse, Tikki smiled widely, elated that she had claimed victory. She grasped the side of the academy for balance as her short, flimsy knees were close to giving in.

Trixx wiped a few beads of sweaty droplets off her forehead and poured again. “You...cheater,” She accused. “You pushed me at the beginning.”

Tikki only grinned further as she twirled one the wave-like strands of her crimson red hair in complete innocence. “I did no such thing.” She said teasingly, playing dumb.

Trixx growled impatiently, agitated that her best friend was pretending to be innocent. “You...” Her mind blanked, she didn’t know what to retort back as if the words vanished from her head.

Letting it go, Trixx casually and friendly wrapped her redheaded friend’s arm over her shoulder to help her walk to the school. Tikki tried to protest; saying that she had enough strength to go to class, but Trixx wasn’t buying it.

She could read Tikki like a book. How she loved sweets which was why she was in the bakery with her dad during most of her free time, adored school(Trixx has no clue why), and that she liked to read fictional novels instead of social media’s newsfeed.

So just like then, Trixx could clearly see that her friend was tired from their mini competition, but mark her words, she was getting vengeance.

Meanwhile as she was rounding the corner, toward the front door, just as they turned, Tikki’s jaw dropped; absolutely awestruck.

“What is it?” Trixx asked curiously as she started to peer from behind. As the purple-eyed girl stared at her best friend, she caught Tikki’s own indigo orbs sparkling and her mouth almost started releasing saliva.

Ba-thump. Ba-thump. Ba-thump went Tikki’s heart.
