It was time for their nightly patrol. Marinette had just about the greatest day today, hanging out with Alya, Nino, and her darling Adrien at the movies after school. Her daydreams spun right round her head like the sun and moon's rotation on the wonderful Earth. She couldn't stop smiling. She tried, but no such luck. But as Ladybug, it was time for duty. All these blissful thoughts were clouding her mind as she leaped and flipped over the peaceful buildings of Paris.
She was heading toward the Eiffel Tower, her usual meet up with her silly partner, the one and only Cat Noir. It was one of their favorite architectural and historical places in all of . What's could be more popular than the Eiffel Tower?
She spotted the steel tower a few blocks away and rushed towards it, but her feet suddenly skidded to a stop when she noticed something on a tall, tin roof. Ladybug made sight of a black belt that resembled a tail flowing freely in the nightly breeze. She noticed the disheveled, sunshiny hair twisting in coils that seemed so soft that she wanted to reach out and pat it. Ladybug smiled, this could only be one person.
Ladybug landed on the metal paving of the tin roof with a soft thud to not disturb whoever lived here and waltz up to her beloved kitten and plopped herself next to him.
"Strange place to meet up tonight kitty." She giggled. He didn't answer; the tenebrious shadows clouding his normally cheerful face.
The awkwardness was inevitable. Ladybug didn't know what to do. She expected some clever remark or a terrible pun as a response, but no. So, Ladybug assumed he just wanted to chill for tonight's patrol so she instead gazed at the starry heavens above with it's crescent moon that was curved like a croissant. This reminded her of her sweetheart, Adrien, how she longs to cuddle in his warm, embracing arms. And she ed his fondness of the delectable sweets at her family's bakery. She just loved him so much.
Ladybug peered at her kitty; hoping for a change in his quiet behavior. Finally, she couldn't take the wait anymore. She never was the most patient person.
"Hey Cat? Are you okay? You don't seem like your usual bouncy self tonight." His response was what made her snap.
"Maybe I don't want to be like that anymore." Cat Noir said in monotone.
Ladybug was shocked. "What in the world is wrong with you?! This isn't the Cat Noir I know!"
"Maybe that Cat Noir is dead. I don't have anything to live for anymore. I could just crawl up in a hole and die and nobody would-" The slap was sudden and unexpected. He felt no pain, but sadness and dread in her senseless attack.
"Y-You stupid cat." She made out. "Don't you know how much I care about you? What about the friends you have? Your family? What about me?!" She was yelling now; pouring her emotions into his heart. "So don't go chasing after death and leaving the ones you love whoever they may be. If you ask me, running away from your life and not facing it like the courageous person I know you are is the coward's way out."
Ladybug stood up in a tall stance and lifted her broken kitten by the bell collar so he could face her and see eye to eye with her beliefs. Meadow green met sky blue. "So live!"
Cat Noir mistakenly and accidentally leaned back and since he was heavier than her; he dragged her with him, tumbling down in spinning circles from the tin roof and they both landed in a dark alleyway between the buildings.
When Cat Noir opened his eyes up next, he realized that he had landed on top of her while pinning her down. And she wasn't pushing him off. They were both breathing rapid, ragged breaths. Their eyes were met both with clarity and brightness at their sweet position. And they were...alone.
"Live." She whispered. "Live for me."
Cat Noir's spunk returned with a quick smirk. "I can do that."
Ladybug couldn't help the tears from streaming down her face. "Whew, I-I t-thought I l-lost you for a s-second there." Still in their position that happened on so many occasions that she lost count, Ladybug cupped both her hands on both sides of his face. "Cat?"
"Ladybug." He said her name. Not his petty nicknames and jokes. This time he said each syllable of her name with such tenderness and care. Cat wiped off the trickling tears off her porcelain face and placed his own clawed paw there.
"You always know what to say to make me feel better. Don't you?" He whispered into her ear; tickling it.
"That's not true...at all." She whispered back.
He leaned in closer, moving his other hand to her back to gently push her up. Cat closed his eyes and felt her tears dripping on his leather glove. Their lips brushed. One more move. The intensity was overwhelming and he yearned to hold her in his arms for eternity. They were so close. Just a millimeter more.
Instantly, Ladybug's instincts grabbed hold and she clasped his shoulders and forcefully pushed him away. She touched her lips and felt his warmth on it as she faced his crest-fallen face.
"I'm s-sorry." She stuttered. "I'm in love with someone else." Her scarlet blush increased. On no, why did she say that? What was happening to her? What was this feeling? Was she about to-no. She couldn't have been about to kiss her flirty, loyal partner. Right?
"N-No it's f-fine." Cat's face had turned a deep shade of crimson. "I-I don't expect y-you to...you know..." He trailed off and laughed awkwardly. He tried to hide the growing pain that was speedily clawing it's way to scatter the cracked pieces of his damaged heart. Of course she was in love with someone else. There's no way she would ever live a reject like himself. She deserved better than him.
"I s-should g-go." Ladybug swung her yo-yo back toward wherever she lived and vanished like Vanisher into the starry night.
Cat Noir sighed. "I love you, Ladybug." In the end, he couldn't stop the few dewdrops of tears that plummeted to the depths of his shattered heart.
