The Next Miraculous Chapter 1

“We start at school in two days, Emma, two days, only 48 hours! How are you not excited,” Serena asked, bouncing excitedly on her bed. Because we started school tomorrow, she had dragged me into her room, forcing me to sit in her chair as she scrolled through the endless teen movies about high school. None of them seemed that appealing.

“I don’t know, but I guess it’s just school? We both did tutoring here, so it might not be that different,” shrugging my shoulders, I spin in her chair, waiting for her to load a movie.

“We’re watching this one called ‘Mean Girls’, if that’s okay?”

“I don’t care, whatever you choose. I’m going to get food,” standing up, opening her door, and stepping out into the pastel green hallway, walking towards the stairs, “do you want anything?”

“Chocolate croissants, please! I saw some in the drawers this morning,” Serena calls back. From her room, I hear faint music playing, probably the intro for the movie, or the opening credits. I grabbed the small box of croissants Serena asked for, as well as a box of brightly coloured macaroons for myself and headed back upstairs, opening the door just in time to see the title of the movie appearing.

Nearly two hours and numerous clichés later, Serena was sitting on her bed, surrounded by blankets and pillows as she frantically googled the school we were going to attend, “I don’t want to go to a school like that!”

“Serena, calm down! It’s just like a movie, and we had to watch it in subtitles. It was made in America, not , not every school would be the same! We’ll be find,” I reassured Serena closing the laptop and placing it on the desk.

“Emma, I need to know,” Serena wails, trying to get her laptop back, but I stop her. I don’t think it was a clever idea to watch that movie, especially with what happened in it, “I don’t want to end up in a book!”

“You won’t! You are way too nice to make enemies, stop panicking,” I shake Serena’s shoulders, trying to get her to snap out of her crazy thoughts.

“Fine, but I will drop out if the school is like that,” Serena threatens, wrapping herself in a blanket and leaning back against the headboard of her bed.

“It’s super late, I’m going to bed. See you in the morning,” I pick up the empty boxes of food, leaving the room and closing Serena’s door behind me. Before I can even step away, I hear Serena walk around her room before she starts typing again. I roll my eyes, but continue anyway. I know there’s no way I can stop her, unless I take away her laptop, which she would never let me do.

“Emma, wake up, we’re going shopping,” a voice shouts in my ear, and I startle awake, sitting up suddenly and smashing foreheads with the person shouting at me.

“Ow! Why are you shouting at me? It’s only,” I check the clock sitting next to my bed, “6:30 in the morning. Go away.”

“We’re going shopping!”

“We don’t need to go shopping at 6:30 in the morning. Let me sleep,” I complain, rolling over and pulling the covers over my head.

“School starts tomorrow, and also your mum is making pancakes,” Serena whispers creepily, sitting on my legs.

“I’m awake,” I throw the blankets off me, leaping out of bed. Mum’s pancakes are always the best, especially since she puts chocolate chips in them.

“I thought that would get you up. Let’s go,” Serena walks out and I follow her, slowly following her down the stairs and into the kitchen, where Aunty Alya and Uncle Nino are sitting at the table with Dad, who was looking at his tablet, swiping occasionally. Mum is cooking pancakes at the stove. The room is filled with the warm smell of cooking cake batter and chocolate.

“Morning,” Dad said, looking up from his tablet.

“I saw pancakes,” Serena flounced into the kitchen, heading straight for the steaming pile of pancakes Mum had placed onto a tray on the counter.

“Good morning to you, Serena,” Aunty Alya said, looking over the top of her glasses at Serena, who was still inching closer and closer to the pancakes.

“Hi, Mum, Dad, Aunty Marinette and Uncle Adrien. And hello pancakes,” Serena said hurriedly, grabbing a plate and reaching over to grab the silver tongs sitting near Mum, who snatched the tongs away before she could get to them. Serena pouted, trying to give Mum the child eyes that worked on her parents, but having three children seems to make you immune to them.

“Who said you were getting pancakes,” Mum asked, pointing the tongs to a sheepish Serena.

“I assumed I got pancakes since I have lived here my entire life and have had pancake privileges the entire time.”

“Take three. No more, or you lose all of the pancakes.”

“Okay, Aunty Marinette. We’re going shopping today for school stuff, right? I really want some cool notebooks and pens.”

“Yeah, but probably not for a few more hours. Alya, Adrien, Nino and I have some things to discuss, but because school starts for you two tomorrow, we will get there,” Mum reassures Serena, who is still holding the empty plate in front of her. She seemed to have notice that her plate was still empty, grabbing three pancakes from the top of the stack and scurrying over to the table where she gave both of her parents a quick hug before inhaling her breakfast.

“Emma, are you having pancakes or are you just going to stand there?”

I looked at Mum and smiled, having totally spaced out to my own world, “Yes please, do we have any maple syrup?”

“Plenty in the cupboard,” Mum handed me a plate with three pancakes on it and I smiled, hoping the rest of the day goes as well as the past few minutes have.
